Golven sleuren 3 Amerikaanse studenten en een leraar de Pacific in bij Parrita. Deze kuststrook is berucht. Er verdrinken veel mensen omdat plotselinge sterke onderstromingen optreden. In dit tragische geval sloeg het weer binnen enkele minuten om en ontstonden er huizenhoge golven.

Coast has deadly history

Three Labette County, Kansas High School students drowned Saturday eight hours from the nearest search and rescue boat on a stretch of Costa Rica's Pacific coast that is notorious for its dangerous currents.
Four other people, including two young brothers, have died there this year, said Luis Hidalgo, president of Costa Rica's National Association of Lifeguards.
He said the cities along 15 ½ miles of coastline popular with tourists put no resources -- no warning signs and no lifeguards -- into protecting swimmers from the ocean.
Because the coast lacks any bay or land mass to break up the current, swimmers are exposed to the ocean's full force, he said, and the water has cut a steep dropoff just offshore
